Landowners Southwark Council and Berkeley Homes have commissioned new designs by Squire & Partners to replace the original Ian Ritchie-designed scheme for eight towers on the prime riverside site.
The new plans that include 374 homes, a cultural centre and a new shopping street opening out onto Potters Fields Park are undergoing various stages of consulation.
The developers plan to announce the occupier of the 8,000 sq m cultural space in spring 2009; a shortlist of four organisations included local theatre group Shunt, a new sports museum and a Commonwealth museum. Planning permission has been granted to develop a hotel and restaurant in the adjacent Lambeth College building.
The proposed buildings are between 6 and 11 storeys, with a 20-storey 'campanile' tower of apartments as the centrepiece. Squire & Partners are working with Gross Max, the landscape architects responsible for the renovation of Potters Fields Park, to integrate their plans with the park.
